OVERVIEW: In our ARC 452 design studio, we have been directed to design a new School of Architecture building for SIU Carbondale campus. The design of any university campus building is guided by the principles of innovation, creativity, identity, sustainability, functionality and efficiency. My proposal takes a strong conceptual position about the changing nature of the teaching-learning process as a responsible building, flexible and good enough to respond to continuous functional adaptations and as a mirror of contemporary culture. Any campus facility is intended to fulfill specific functions on one hand, but also to participate within the gathering of other facilities, structures and the landscape around it as a coherent and balanced environment. An educational building should always be an attractive place, attractive in a sense that not only catches attention from all around but also, and mainly, in a sense that attracts students, faculty and any other participant to it. A place that makes them feel better and motivated to perform the best of them. As an important part of the integration procedure related to this studio, we are expected to refer to the correspondent building codes and the local zoning ordinance for information on accessibility, height restrictions, setbacks, easements, flood issues, egress and fire containment, etc. Additionally; for guidelines refer to the Americans with Disabilities Act and the principles of Universal Design, and many other sources that you can find in Morris Library and Internet. My building constist of three floors that cantiliver off of each other on both the North and South Side and collide into a large central atrium. When a student enters the building they are able to see the trusses suspended from the ceilding and the circulation of people from floor to floor. The building is constructed entirely of steel and is surrounded by curtain wall glazed glass.
